Pat Coombs

Pat Coombs  (Patricia Doreen Coombs)  b Camberwell, London 27/8/26 d Northwood, London  25/5/2002

Pat was a well respected character actress, who often portrayed downtrodden females. She was one of three children and her father worked in insurance for the Employers’ Liability the forerunner of the Commercial Union. Pat as a girl attended the County School for Girls in Beckenham, Kent.

She started her professional life as a nursery school assistant, she left this role and went into acting and won a scholarship to LAMDA with her friend Vivien Merchant (1929-82) who was also to become an actress, Pat was subsequently to teach dialect to the students. After starting in rep in Scunthorpe, she first came to prominence in the radio series as Nola playing a rather dim and domineered daughter of Irene Handl in Arthur Askey’s, Hello Playmates, Pat and Irene double act had first appeared on Bob Monkhouse’s show in 1958. Her earlier stage and rep work had put her in good stead for television as she had already acted as a stooge for Ted Ray and Charlie Chester.

She also made two memorable appearances on televisions Hancock Half Hour (1957-58) as Matilda and worked with Cyril Fletcher and Dick Emery in the early sixties. On television, she was an occasional actress throughout the sixties. Her first of two uncredited roles in a Carry On was in Doctor (1967) as a brief cameo as an anxious patient. She appeared in the comedy series Beggar Thy Neighbour (1966-68) as Lana Butt with Reg Varney and June Whitfield. In 1969 she appeared as the new matron in Again Doctor who tells Kenneth Williams character to ‘clear off’!

In 1971 she appeared in On The Buses, Dad’s Army and the comedy series Lollipop Loves Mr. Mole with Peggy Mount and Hugh Lloyd. She was reunited with Peggy Mount in the excellent You’re Only Young Twice (1977-81) another comedy series as Cisse Lupin whose character is totally dominated and bullied by Peggy Mount, as a result of the series the two would become very close friends. Pat was the subject of This Is Your Life in 1978. Her voice was also used for children’s television programmes, which included Rag Dolly Anna (1982-87), Mooncat and Co (1984) and voiced one of the puppets in Playbox (1988).

Her later work also included playing Marge Green in Eastenders (1989-90), she was also a regular guest on Noel Edmonds Noel’s House Party (1992-95) and was often seen on games shows. Pat appeared in the television series Doctors in 2001and her last screen appearance was in the following year shortly before her death in Heroes of Comedy but you can tell by this time she was very ill. Her health had started to detoriate as early as 1995 when she was diagnosed with osteoporosis, despite this she continued to work and became an active campaigner for The National Osteoporosis Society. Her Christmas appeal letter raised £100,000 for the charity's research. She died in 2002 from emphysema in Denville Hall actors' home, a west London nursing home to which she had moved to be close to her friend Peggy Mount, who had died six months earlier.

Clive Dunn

Clive Dunn OBE (Clive Robert Benjamin Dunn) b Covent Garden, London 9/1/1920 d Algarve, Portugal 6/11/2012

As a child Clive almost died from post-operative complications after a supernumerary nipple was removed. He was educated at Sevenoaks School in Kent then an independent school for boys. After finishing school he then went to the Italia Conti Academy Theatre of Arts in London.

Clive’s first screen appearance was as early as 1935 when he was one of the boys in the Will Hay film Boys Will Be Boys, he would reappear two years later with Will Hay in Good Morning Boys. During the war he served with the 4th Queens Own Hussars, however he was captured in Greece and spent fours years as a prisoner of war in Austria. After the war he started regular work in music hall and theatres gaining experience mainly in comedy, but also playing various characters actors and showing a skill for playing older characters that would serve in well in later life.

By the mid fifties he started to appear regularly on television and in 1956 he became a semi regular on The Tony Hancock Show and appeared in a dozen shows. In 1960 he played ‘Old’ Beerbohm Johnson in Bootsie and Snudge appearing in over sixty episodes over a three year period. It was playing this much older character that gained him national fame. Further television appearances followed over the next few years until in 1968 he was cast Corporal Jack Jones in Dads Army and would appear in the show until 1977. Clive was only 48 when he was cast in the role.

It is now well documented that Clive fell out with Arthur Lowe who played Captain Mainwaring in the show over politics, when Clive received the OBE , it was reported that Lowe would only accept a higher-rated honour from the Queen. In 1970 Clive used his image to become a pop star as he had a number one hit with Grandad, although he released several other singles none could match the success of Grandad.

Later in 1979 he played the character Charlie Quick in the television series Grandad which ran until 1984. After the series finished Clive retired from acting and went to live in Portugal. In his personal life Clive had married Patricia Kenyon a fashion model in 1951 but were divorced in 1958. The following year Clive married actress Priscilla Pughe-Morgan and the couple had two daughters. Clive spent most of his retirement painting until in his latter days his eye sight almost left him blind.

Clive died in 2012 following an operation, Clive was the cousin of actress Gretchen Franklin (1911-2005), who was best remembered for playing Ethel Skinner in Eastenders. In fact when Gretchen died Clive was left a good sum of money in her will.
